According to a report released last month by Nafsa: Association of International Educators, the amount that international students contributed to the U.S. economy in 2019-20 decreased 4.4 percent from the previous year, to $38.7 billion, reported The Chronicle of Higher Education.

The drop was the first in the more than two decades that Nafsa has been calculating economic impact data, according to the Chronicle.

The number of jobs created or supported by international students also decreased, by more than 9 percent from the previous year.

These declines come as new international students decreased 43 percent this fall from the previous year, altering campuses and college towns, the Chronicle reported. The number of new international students in the United States has been declining since 2016. In fall 2019, overall international student attendance dropped nearly 2 percent.
